WHAT's HAPPENING?

Maternity Portrait Session at the Beach

The beach is a beautiful location for a maternity photo shoot, especially when the mum-to-be is as radiant as Bec.

We were at Wollongong, under the light house, which offers some wonderful choices for backgrounds.

Bec bought her dress online specially for the photo-shoot and took great care with her hair and make-up. This helped make the final images look really special - wall worthy art.

Family Portrait Experiences - making it fun!

Fun on the Farm - Justin meets Moonbi

It's hard to entice some two-year-olds to smile for the camera. I've learned this the hard way trying to capture genuine, whole-face smiles in the photography studio. When the smiles aren't happening Mum and Dad get stressed, the kids pick up on it and they are even less likely to smile. It's not fun for anyone, and it can show in the images.

So I decided to make my family photo-shoots about fun.

Beth and Alex bought their two little boys to my farm and there we got all the wonderful family portraits they wanted, plus the boys had lots of fun.

This is Justin's 'we're going to see the ponies' smile.

The boys got to run around and to see the ponies, meet the sheep and the chickens. They collected eggs, picked lemons and petted the horses, and I photographed their great smiles and cute 'first experience' expressions.

"I picked a lemon."

"I picked a lemon."

It was tonnes of fun and we got wonderful, candid images the family love. Beth said "Thank you Heather. I was really happy with today. Justine had a ball and the images are beautiful. Just what we were after."

So I'll be offering these portrait experiences as the first choice for family sessions. Whether its on my farm, at the park, on a beautiful bush trail or at the beach, it will be fun. Of course clients can still opt for the regular studio sessions if they choose.

Stories Worth Capturing

A (great) picture is 'worth a thousand words'.

Creating memorable images is first about the story. Everyone has a story. The sum of their individual genetic heritage, unique experiences, passions, preferences, loves, loathes and quirks. The recipe of an individual.

When you take a special photograph (or have one taken) think about your subject's story.

The story could be all in the eyes - and if that's the case you need to make sure the eyes of your subject have sparkle, colour and intrigue. How do you get sparkle without making them squint? That's about great lighting - whether it's artificial or natural. In the image below the highlight reflected in the Bride's eyes is from a 'Beauty Dish' - a professional artificial light that produces beautiful natural colour. If you're using the sun you'll usually need some kind of reflector - a white piece of cardboard will often do the trick.

Here the story is all about the eyes and the light is created with a professional 'beauty dish'.

The story is obvious without the text, but what horse crazy girl wouldn't want this portrait on her wall?

In this image the light is a big piece of white cardboard used to bounce the late afternoon sun.

This image is all about the story! One to pull out at the 21st! The light from the big facing window provides nice illumination and shadow detail. A narrow depth of field (a very wide aperture on the camera) contributes to the story - So many toys (so little time).

This portrait of a successful CEO says so much about her - I'm a sophisticated, confident business woman, but I'm from the country and I have my feet firmly planted on the ground.

Whether I'm photographing a family, a wedding, a bride or a portrait, I'm always thinking about the story.

For the Love of Horses

I love horses, everything about them really - their power, their grace, those moments when you really connect with them and the challenge of winning (and keeping) their trust.

I shot this image of equestrian Christan Trainor in my studio. I wanted to create an image that spoke to her love of horses, her athleticism and her beauty and style. I love how this shot turned out. It gave me the idea of doing a series of portraits of equestrians that combines the person with a beautiful drawing or artwork of horses. Keep an eye out for those, I think they'll be as lovely as they are different.

I'm also going to be focusing on horse portraits. Could there be a better gift for the horse lover than a wall worthy shot of their best friend?

Babies in the Studio

Ready for an Adventure

My first Baby photoshoots in the new Studio were lots of fun.

Having a place where its easy to park and get in and out with prams and baby paraphernalia made for a stress free start. Then once everything and everyone was inside, the warm, welcoming and private studio, provided just the environment I was hoping for - one where mum (and so bub) could relax and enjoy the experience.

I've already acquired a good collection of props and clothes - Collette Dinnigan dresses, baby jean overalls, stylish outfits for mums, flowers, vintage baskets, and a lovely bike with a basket on the front big (yet cozy) enough for the baby to feel safe and happy.

I like a simple clean white background for baby photos, so the focus is on the baby and the images translate beautifully to the elegance of black and white.

Mum & Bub Photoshoot

Bringing along favourite toys adds to the final photographs as well. Baby Connor had a collection of his bedtime buddies.
